Proton Exchange Membrane

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) is the core component of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) and plays a key role in battery performance. PEM not only requires high proton conductivity, but also has barrier properties for fuel gas and reaction gas. PEM consist of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionic polymers, which are essentially copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and different perfluorosulfonic acid monomers. The best-known PEM material is Nafion, produced by DuPont, which is made of Perfluorosulfonyl fluoroethyl - propyl - vinyl ether(PSEPVE). Gore has developed a composite membrane consisting of a PTFE component and a perfluorosulfonic acid component, where PTFE provides mechanical strength and dimensional stability, while perfluorosulfonic acid provides Proton conductivity.
